Benefits of LED Lighting
What is an LED? This light emitting diode (LED) contains a semiconductor instead of a filament like you would find in most light bulbs. In recent years LEDs have become a more attractive source of lighting than the traditional fluorescent tubes or incandescent bulbs in public environments. All three have advantages and disadvantages but LEDs are winning the consumer’s vote. What are some of the benefits of using a LED light source?
LED bulbs have an outstanding lifetime that is known to last up to 100,000 hours. So that means that a light bulb you leave on for eight hours each day will end up lasting about twenty years at its optimum brightness. LED bulbs are different that standard light bulbs in the fact that they do not burn out. The light eventually starts emitting a lower output, making the bulb less bright.
LED energy efficiency is estimated that about 80% to 90% of the energy being used is being converted into light. With traditional fluorescent bulbs it is only about 20%. That means that 80% of the energy from those types of bulbs is not being utilized properly. A business does not want their light source heating the building, it needs to illuminate it.
LED's are not made of glass which makes them far less fragile than both fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. This makes them a lot more durable and less likely to become unusable if it is dropped accidentally. It also removes the dangers of getting cut on broken glass, since no glass is present in the bulb at all. LED bulbs are also shock resistant which makes for a great bulb to use outside where weather conditions can vary.
LED bulbs generate almost no heat and are cool to the touch. They can be left on for hours at a time with no threat of accidental fire or burn. LEDs only produce 3.4 BTUs per hour, compared to incandescent bulbs that let off 85.
LED bulbs are recyclable and are made from nontoxic materials. Some other lighting like fluorescent bulbs can contain traces of mercury.
LED bulbs provide instant illumination at full brightness, while lighting with other bulbs may take several seconds to reach its full potential brightness. Turning the lights on and off frequently will not reduce the life expectancy of a LED.
There are many benefits to using an LED over other light sources in any business. The light bulb’s life and efficiency alone is enough to save you company money, not to mention it is better for the environment. Try LEDs out, any business will wonder how they did without this resource before.
